Maya & Conner

Our friend Erin stopped by today and her lovely children, Maya and Conner, gave me a great opportunity to try out some new lenses and camera that we picked up recently.

While Melissa and Erin were chatting I ran around the yard with the kids. Maya chased me with a dandelion and Conner climbed on things. :) Thanks for the practice you guys!

"Jive at Five" in Richland, WA

Commentary by: Ross

Melissa recently had an opportunity to perform with Jive at Five, a Big Band Jazz ensemble, of which she’s been a member since 2006. The big band was performing for Navy Submarine Veterans at the annual “Submarine Ball.”

The band plays jazz standards which Melissa will sing on about half of them, and the other half are instrumental only. The band has attracted swing dancers (and just dancing in general) every time I've seen them perform... whether there is a dance floor or not, there are people dancing!

So of course I had to bring a camera! =P

Below is Steve Haberman, a professional pianist, which the band was honored to perform with. You can learn more about his radio show, which features live jazz and Tri-Cities’ area events at www.groovetc.com. You can also hear some of Melissa’s live recordings at www.MelissaJamesJazz.com

Introducing our New Black & White Style!

commentary by: Melissa James
I've been fiddling around with a new black and white film style and we're ready to start using it in our photography sessions. Look for blurred lines, soft focus, and romantic themes. (Perfect for brides, babies, and maternity shoots). Just think, Ross is the digital pro (and photo genius) and I'm the old school side kick. A perfect team! Ross agreed to let me try out my new style on him. What do you think? He's not a bride or having a baby, but it works. :)

Las Vegas - WPPI

Where do photographers go to learn business strategies and find new products? Las Vegas, of course! For the second year in a row, we attended the Wedding and Portrait Photographers International Convention (WPPI). We didn't have much time to explore the city, but Ross made sure to get some photos along the way.

That's us in the mirror :) We were walking around the Bellagio, "looking for a place to eat", of course Ross wasn't really looking for a place to eat... he was taking pictures of walls, furniture and mirrors.

It was a fun trip but we are glad to be back in Washington state!

Mount Rainier

Commentary by Ross
The last several times we have been in the Seattle area I noticed that there was not much of a view of Mt Rainier because of clouds/fog. But this morning in Seatac I saw it... so I had to take a photo. This was from the dog park in Seatac where we were letting Diesel (our dog) run free.

Kittitas County Fair

Commentary by: Melissa
Elephant ears…onion rings….horse poop….it’s RODEO time again! We decided to have a booth at the Kittitas County Fair this year to let people know we’re here. We pretty much brought our whole living room: leather couch, giant wall portraits, TV (for viewing portrait slideshows), plants, and track lights. If you stopped by our booth to say hi, THANKS! If not, look us up next year! (Imagine that last line in a Cowboy accent).

...haha the funny guy

Birch Bay Get-Away

Commentary by Melissa
We’re always trying to convince people to take their pictures half submerged in water, with regular clothes on. What could be more fun? But since we hadn’t gotten any takers so far, we thought we’d try it first. While at Birch Bay for a family get-together, we headed out to a beach side State Park. One problem: who’s gonna take the pictures? We ended up with these portraits only with the help of our camera timer and Ross’s parents. Thanks Mom and Dad! And by the way, it’s kind of fun to play in the water with regular clothes on. Pictures with swimsuits are overrated!

Diesel, our jack russell terrier, also had fun in the salt water...

Royal Family Kids Camp

Commentary by Melissa
For the past three years, we’ve had the amazing opportunity to be counselors at Royal Family Kids Camp. This nationwide organization creates camps for foster kids so they can have a safe, fun week. The kids don’t have to pay to go to camp, and all staff and counselors are volunteers. For safety and privacy reasons, we aren’t allowed to show pictures of the kids, but let me tell you, they are the cutest kids in the WORLD! Ross and his fellow counselors went all out decorating their cabin this year! Check out this website for more information about our particular camp: http://pasco.rfkc.org

Jeff

Jeff, welcome to the Ross James Photography team!!

Jeff is now helps us as a lighting grip. He holds the record for the longest time holding the reflector above his head. =D just kidding

Understanding lighting and being able to control it is what we strive for and we're glad to have your help Jeff.

Here's a few of Jeff at dark, using only a flash, different reflective materials and a few street/building lights in the background.

Jeff, you rock!

Melissa and Diesel

The time had come for us to have our own family wall portrait. One problem: someone had to take it! We compromised and decided it’d just be me and Diesel. We drove to Kirkland, WA where I was born. We found this quiet street right off the Waterfront.

The first photo below we have created as our own 30" canvas wall portrait. If you know anything about Jack Russells, you know there’s no way Diesel would be sitting so calmly beside me without a leash on. The leash was painted out and he’s sitting so pretty because he’s staring at a treat that our assistant is holding. The ugly yellow banner (seen in the second photo only) was also painted away for our portrait.

When we got home, me and Diesel put the busy day behind us and took a nap. (If you didn’t notice, our “mascot” Diesel thinks he’s a human).

Tri-Cities Cable Bridge

We’d had a long shoot on the Columbia River with Darrell and Vanessa and Ross and Darrell had just pulled out of the parking lot to leave. Vanessa and I weren’t far behind. Suddenly, the Camaro lurched to a stop and Ross leapt out of the car, camera in hand. The sun was pretty much gone, so the street lights were used to illuminating the bridge. Let’s just say we didn’t get home on time, but the results were well worth it!

Ken Whitmire & The Wall Portrait Conference '07

We spent the week with Ken Whitmire at his studio in Yakima, WA and it was an experience that will be long remembered. Ken is the master of wall portraiture as far as many people are concerned (myself included). The studio was full with photographers from all around the world who had come to learn from Ken and his team. We went along on some sessions and got to observe and help out, and through out the week we were walked through all the production stages involved creating canvas wall portraits.

I had fun talking with Courtney (above), he is a great guy/photographer from Miami.

One of the Ken's location sessions as the family was preparing to pose for their portrait.
